It is an evergreen shrub with an almost linear trunk that branches upwards and can reach up to 10 metres in height; it has light green elliptical leaves with roughly jagged edges. It blossoms in autumn, producing very small, inconspicuous, reddish-green flowers in the axils of the leaves, which are followed by fruits that ripen in late summer and autumn.
